Christmas in Cochrane Keeps Tradition Alive and a Feeling of Connection

Whether you are new to the Cochrane community or have been residing here for years, Christmas festivals continue to keep the heart in our community. Hoping the holiday season brings you and your’s times of joy and prosperity, the Kendra Watt Real Estate Group is providing you with a run down of holiday celebrations for all genders, ages, and beliefs to partake in.

The Magic of the Christmas season begins in town on November 23rd as Cochrane Light Up celebrates its 35th annual event. This inclusive evening festival is one of tradition for many local families as residents gather on Historic Main Street (First Street) to welcome the holiday season to Cochrane. Free hotdogs, hot chococolate, hay rides, and jolly Ol’ St. Nick are all staples of this favourite community-wide event. Light Up is the perfect place to get into the festive spirit whether by partaking in the celebration, grabbing a bite at one of Cochrane’s culinary spots, or finding that perfect present in one of the many shops that line Historic Main Street. To save yourself stress, plan to catch a free ride on Cochrane’s COLT on-demand transit system to enjoy the celebration which runs from 4:30 to 7:30 in the evening.

For Cochrane’s younger shoppers in need of gifts, Home Treasures will be celebrating their 14th Annual Kids Christmas Event on December 7th. Located at 118-Centre Avenue, children ages two to twelve can get help shopping for a maximum of five special presents for five dollars thanks to volunteers. Helping youngsters choose, purchase and wrap their selections, the children’s 10 a.m to 4 p.m. shopping event is extremely popular.

Later that evening (December 7) residents are invited to partake in the second annual Parade of Lights, hosted by the Cochrane Light Up committee. Head on down early to secure your spot along Main Street and be dazzled by a display of beautifully lit up Christmas themed floats beginning at 6 p.m.

Making sure all Cochrane families have a great Christmas morning, Stuff A Bus will be held on December 14th at Canadian Tire. This one-day event encourages residents to provide a new unwrapped gift/toy or non-perishable food donation to help support those who are experiencing financial hardship of any kind. Working in partnership, the Cochrane and Area Events Society (CAES) and the Cochrane Activettes roll up their sleeves and get to work in support of the Activettes, Share Your Christmas program so that all residents can experience a stress-free Christmas morning. The annual toy drive is the perfect opportunity for children of all ages to understand the value of giving back. Contributing families are invited to enjoy complimentary beverages and a professional electronic Christmas photo. Stuff a Bus runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is a heart warming celebration perfectly showcasing our community’s generosity.

If you are hoping to see Santa on Christmas Eve, you’re in luck. Cochrane’s firefighters and Protective Services members will be escorting Santa via fire truck as they bring holiday greetings to all Cochrane communities. The Christmas Eve Santa Run will be coming to a neighbourhood near you where Santa and firefighting elves will present candy canes to attendees as they look for the one community that stands out in terms of lights, holiday spirit, and non-perishable food donations. A timeline and itinerary for the event will be out shortly.

Lastly, after many years of asking, Cochrane families will be able to kick off 2020 together with their inaugural New Year’s Eve family skating party. The end of the year celebration will begin at 4 in the afternoon and will include a deejay, food, refreshments, and fireworks before wrapping up at 7, at Mitford Park.
